More slang/Gírias

Só em português

Here you can find a dictionary of various expressions. If you click on an entry, the first part is in Portuguese and gives you the origin of the phrase or word. If you scroll down just a little, though, a definition in English is also there.

A good site for Brazilian Portuguese

This is a good site for learning about Brazilian Portuguese. It is in English, although the site is based in Finland. Go figure! Desfrutem-se!

Online English-Portuguese Dictionary

This is a free, online English-Portuguese dictionary. It only works with single words, so you should be very careful, because a single word cut out of context could have several different meanings. It is apparently more geared toward European Portuguese. For example, if you try to find "dog," it will offer "cão," although "cachorro" is generally more common in Brazil.

Instituto Euclides da Cunha

The Instituto Euclides da Cunha is a site solely in Portuguese. It is probably better suited for an advanced learner. The "Não tropece na língua" section is a fun and valuable resource for the finer elements of language use in Brazil. The Institute discusses both erudite, written language and the contemporary spoken language, although the gíria (slang) discussed is usually the kind of slang that is older and has had more time to seep into popular usage throughout Brazil.

Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde/ Cape Verde is a group of islands that is a member of the PALOP--the African nations that have Portuguese as an official language. However, Cabo Verde usually uses a creole language based on Portuguese, which is not necessarily the same as conventional Portuguese. Here are some links that will help you with Cabo Verde Creole!

Instituto Camões

The Instituto Camões has info about the Portuguese language as well, under the large banner marked Língua. Again, this is all in Portuguese, but there are also areas in English, Spanish, and French, although these are often under construction, so Tenham cuidado! :D

Academia Brasileira das Letras

The Academia Brasileira das Letras has some nice resources about the Portuguese Language as it is used in Brazil. This site is all in Portuguese. The links with the most info about the language are found under the heading "Nossa Língua." Some dictionaries are available as well as spelling guides (note: spelling can be different between Brazilian, Conitinental European, and African versions of Portuguese!), and history.

Here is a site that can do a spellcheck and grammar check of short passages written in Portuguese. Make sure that you note (pay attention to the flag to the right above the box for the text) whether you want it to check against Brazilian or European Portuguese!

Online Dictionary

There is a wonderful online dictionary for Portuguese. It is based in Portugal, so the default will be Continental Portuguese, but it does also have a great cataloguing of vocabulary and slang from Brazil and the PALOP (the African nations that speak Portuguese).

Note: This is a dictionary of Portuguese in Portuguese, so English and Spanish, etc., will avail you not! :)
